The Veterans Administration Domiciliary in white city Oregon is part of what was
once one of the largest army bases on the west coast. It was a training facility
during world war Two , and at one time there were at least 4 Fire stations . In
1975 most of the original base was gone except for the hospital buildings and
some base housing. The old camp white hospital became a old soldiers home run
by the Veterans Administration. The beautiful old building and grounds Boasted
a 9 hole Golf corse , pond, Movie theater, Infirmary, Bowling alley , and a fire
station. The hospital itself consisted of miles of hallways, tunnels and attic
spaces. It was not unusual for the fire fighters to be asked to catch wild cats
in the tunnels. Or capture Bat's that found there way out of the attic and into
the infirmary chasing the nurses. I have many fond memories of these years, It
may not have been the most action backed assignment of my career, but I came away
with My Fire Science degree, a Emt 2 Certification, great stories , and friendships
.
