Rice Bugs

Rice Bugs

One of the Many Interesting things about being stationed as a Firefighter at Ubon Thialand Was a delicacy Called Mang-di Or Rice Bug. During the monsoon Rains the bugs would gorge themselves in the rice Fields and then fly off. At night they would be attracted to the Lights of the airbase like moth's to a flame, circle and crash to the ground sometimes by the Thousands. If you happened to be lucky enough to be on ramp patrol these nights you could collect them, being very careful to pick them up by their back, much like picking up a crawdad. Mang-di could be given to Thai Friends or sold downtown for Hah Bahdt (25 cents ) apiece. They were normally Cooked and used as a sauce, but the heads could be snapped off and the rice mixture sucked out.
